looking for red plating tube pics

Post by guilds100 »

Ive heard the term used, but dont know what red plating tubes look like. Does anyone have a pic of a normal tube and a red plating power tube?

Joe gave a tube that looked like that a cool glass of water to cool it down, against recommendation [seriously, don't do it...lol].
Hopefully you catch it before it's meltdown time like above pic.
Turn the amp on, standby off, watch the tube filaments light completely [takes like 15 seconds], take a mental picture of what's glowing where and how much. Play the amp, the appearance of the tube should not change as far as redplating, if it does it's bias time.
Blue doesn't count, that's just the electrons boiling off the cathode [normal] and becoming visible.
If you switch standby to off position [amp still on] and notice any orangey glow diminishing, that'd be the tube ceasing to redplate...iow redplating when 'on/on/playing'.

Is the tube on the left running correctly? I'm nowhere near the one on the right but more like the one on the left.

Silly me, the left one is a rectifier. could you post a pic of what the output tube looks like properly biased?

I find in practice it doesn't get bright like that (unless you let it go way too long). In marginal cases, you almost have to turn the lights off to see the dull red plate glow.

I hope you are not using redplating as way to bias your amp...
